Cats see at least six times better in the dark than we do, giving them the best night vision of all domestic species. Some people are more allergic to cats than dogs, not from the fur, but the saliva residue from their licking, which contains a kind of "detergent", effective in keeping their fur clean and fresh smelling. Like dogs, cats have sweat glands only in their feet, so licking also serves to regulate body temperature. Although the average life span of a cat is fourteen to twenty years, some pampered felines have lived into their thirties! Cats spend more time sleeping than any other mammals, although they are in deep sleep for only three to four hours a day. During deep sleep, their "third eyelid" is closed, a thin membrane that slides across the eyeball, underneath the regular eyelid. Many common houseplants are poisonous to cats, including chrysanthemums, philodendrons, daffodils, asparagus ferns, Boston and English ivies. Cats tend to be left-pawed. To test your pet, tape an empty paper tube, from toilet tissue or paper towels, to the floor. Allow her to explore and become familiar with the tube for a few minutes, then place a favorite treat inside the tube where she can easily reach it. Note which paw she uses and repeat the test about ten times, for good results. If she uses left and right equally, your cat is ambidextrous! |
